We have an awkwardly shaped master bedroom with no storage space and we saw those Sharps adverts on telly.
This is our first house and we have no idea how much things like this should cost. They do a free design visit and there’s a half price sale on so why not give them a call and get a ball park figure.
So how much do you reckon this will cost us? Plain white shaker style doors with simple grey knobs and an oak veneer dressing table.
£6900 (£13750 before discounts apparently)
I knew it wouldn’t be cheap but bloody Nora. Am I being tight or is that normal? Any tips for getting something similar elsewhere?
If anyone in Sheffild can build it I have a job for you.

My guess based on having a nice Polish chap do some for me, is that you’re looking at £3-4k for that. And that’s London prices. That was pre COVID though.

As soon as I saw Sharps I was going to say £12k at least, but they always have a 50% discount going.
I doubt that shape is going to be cheap but would expect to be able to get something decent for less than £7k!

That fits with what we paid, a couple of grand after discount, nowhere near as complex or big though.

Sharps are no different to double glazing salesmen. Hammonds is another option but again they do the same “it should be this but if you sign today” bollox. You need a joiner on a day rate and buy the materials yourself

I’m Googling now for Sheffield bespoke furniture type people. There seems to be lots of options.

He wasn’t too bad to be honest. He did leap into all the payment options as soon as we said we liked it but I said straight away we need to sleep on it. I think we kept our poker faces until he was out the door!

Speak to my brother in law Jonny at https://www.pre-eminence.co.uk/.
They do lots of nice bespoke stuff. Based in Matlock.
Do be aware though that thanks to brexit and supply chain issues, timber prices have pretty much doubled.

I cant help but gauge what materials are needed for such a job, working out their price, how you’d go about etc.
Any company asking(un discounted price) of what is effectively the same price as a small car is ripping you off.
The last company I worked for(Bespoke joinery/cabinetry) would still probably be a bit less than 6K if it was in solid oak, or black walnut etc.
Veneered mdf 😕 havin’ a laff.

Any decent carpenter would be able to do that for you. Get a few prices from local tradesmen to compare. Wish I was closer!

Had something not as fancy as that but taking out some cupboards and building new cupboards with inbuilt chest of drawers and a few other bits in an awkward shaped landing for about 3k.

About £2.5K fitted in unpainted mdf, maybe another £700 to paint it. Drawers are expensive to make (£100 plus the runners) so if you want say, oiled birch ply with decent runners then that quickly adds up and would be more.

I would ask a local joiner to provide a quote. From experience we recently had wardrobes fitted in two bedrooms to either side of the chimney breast. 4 unpainted units made in a mixture of softwood and mdf came to 3k

I’m not near you, but had this done just over a year ago. A couple more cupboards than your diagram, 2 bedside units, 2 chest of drawers. That was £4k for the local chippy, plus handles and painting so your £7k price does seem a bit steep.
However the guy painting really mucked it up. Kindly painted our bedsheets, our thermostat and a bit of our ceiling for us! So perhaps getting it done by a company that pre paint in a factory would have been better. Got a quote from Martin West Interiors, wish we’d gone with them in hindsight as they were reasonable. No idea if they’re national or not.

Sharps are absolute sharks. Same group as Moben kitchens and the bathroom company who’s name I forget (Dolphin?). Proper old-school, hard sell, crazy price bullshit.
Find a local joiner, you’ll get it for a lot, lot, less.

Try white rose kitchens in barnsley (ignore the name!)
They do bedrooms as well as kitchen. Top blokes and decent pricing. Think we paid 5k ish for a 4 metre wardrobe and a 2.8 metre wardrobe both of which had full interior fittings as well.

We had a bedroom done recently by Hammonds. Sharps was about £3k more than Hammonds. Sharps slagged Hammonds off completely but appears no worse quality to Sharps, apparently it’s the same stuff as M&S
Will post a pic tomorrow, think it was about £4k total
Couldn’t find any local people to do it round our way

4-5.5k perhaps.

Try Freebird Interiors. They specialise in fitted stuff. Alistair is the boss and you can find them on YouTube a lot. Based in Sheffield.

There’s a company, HPP who have a depot in Sheffield. They stock high quality furniture board and make beautiful vinyl coated MDF wardrobe doors to millimetre precision. Angled shaker doors- no problem. Very sensible prices. Get in touch with them and ask for a local independent who uses them.
Try and get bi-fold doors. The single robes will hardly provide much hanging space and are a right pain to use. If not, specify 170 degree hinges.

Was going to say Freebird too. He’s put out some good videos like this which can help get your head around where extra money goes with fitted furniture.
Sharps and the like seem to just use standard size boxes and big filler panels to make it fit, rather than making to exact size.
We had a couple of alcove wardrobes made when we moved in here – was to a budget and someone a friend recommended but still a few grand for unpainted several years ago. The doors are crap and warped in no time (fake shaker, border stuck on a flat sheet) and it took me a bloody age to paint to an ok standard. It’s what got me into making my own fitted stuff, it takes me a while but I’m always happier than handing over enough for a nice bike for something I’m not delighted with.

Pic of ours, £4K from Hammonds including desk area and bedside units.
We couldn’t find any local cabinet makers where we live.
The price of wood has more than doubled in the last year so don’t expect a local maker to be much of any cheaper

OP, Duncan from this parish (and BIL) is your way and a joiner. Recently showed me a photo of a wardrobe not un-similar to your drawing (well, half of it) that he made.
You mind if I pass on your info for him to DM you?

We paid Hammonds around £5k to install fitted wardrobes and a dressing table just about six weeks ago. It’s not a big room and we needed a lot of storage, given current costs of timber I’d doubt very much if a local tradesman would have saved me much money and would likely not have been so creative with the design.
Sharps wanted substantially more.
Hammonds used to supply and install fitted wardrobes for John Lewis (as well as M&S as mentioned above) and the only difference was that they’d apply a small John Lewis sticker to the interior of some of the doors, the price however was vastly different.

We used Hammonds about 3 years ago for a fitted bedroom. 3 double wardrobes with all manner of rails, shelves, lights, etc in them, a single corner/side piece about 5m in overall length with 5 stacks of draws, a dressing table, and a hidden laundry basket, and two bedside units. Came to about £7k, IIRC the first quote was about £15k.
They are pushy, and prices are waaay over the top initially, but they can be beaten down if you stand your ground. I have to say, the quality is excellent so very happy with the result.

See, now, my attitude to this is “there’s negotiation, and there’s taking the piss with the initial price, so they can do one”

The problem with Sharps / Neville Johnson etc is all those adverts in the sunday colour supplements etc cost a fortune and mean they have to charge 25% over a local cabinet maker just to cover their marketing costs etc.

Had a quote for a similar type fitting from Hammonds, went with a local furniture company in the end and finished with what I thought to be a better product for the same cost. The wardrobe was completely lined (fitted on a external facing wall) and they did other fittings to match in the bedroom. Pleased with the result after accepting the eye watering costs.

Do you actually want a dressing table? I have a set up not dissimilar (ancient thing, came with the house) and I’d much rather have the space as drawers, shelves, and maybe a mirror on a door instead. Does anyone want to sit at a dressing table on a daily basis to put makeup on? My table bit just gathers dust and crap. A single shelf for perfume, hairbrush etc would suffice.

Thats one of the things that annoyed me with Sharps. They said they had a wonderful rnage of ‘Office’ furniture.
When I started querying desk heights and openings for chairs, it was clear it was bull and just their normal ‘dressing tables’. They tried to sell me a desk that my chair wouldnt fit under, or the desk be at the right height for working.

That space is currently occupied by a folding barbecue table with laptop, midi keyboard, headphones, bass amp, guitar etc. It’s the only part of the house where I can hide and zone out for a while in between feeds and changing nappies so I’m quite keen to keep it as a desk space/lego table. We don’t have room for a separate office. I promise not to start wearing makeup.
Thanks for the pointers everyone. I’ve got a shortlist of some very local businesses who look like they do good work. I’m going to contact them one at a time and see what my options are.

back to the OP, we have a similar shaped space in our loft conversion, and have been through the process of pricing something similar, to replace what the builder put in 10 years plus back. I think our Sharps quote, post discount, was around 8K. We also tried a couple of local specialists and a trusted joiner who did our kitchen last summer. Even the local guys were 7k or more. We haven’t done anything with it yet..

Yeah, you could buy a bicycle/motorbike/car/watch/coffee machine/artisan woodburner for that!
But yeah, it’s not just ‘a wardrobe’ though is it?
What do I know..I got my wardrobe out of a skip 😂

They do this so you think you already have the best price and won’t haggle. Try haggling. I bet you’ll easily get another 10% to 15% off that price.
Edit – and tell them the handles on the far left and right doors are in different positions – that’s another 10% discount. Bloody amateurs.
Edit edit – and how high is the ceiling? All the hanging space goes into the eaves so there might not be a great deal of room for full length stuff in the wardrobe parts.
